Claim 2 Evidence
Westchester students are critical thinkers who grapple and solve complex, authentic, mathematical problems in a variety of ways.
Students at Westchester make deep connections with mathematical content using a variety of tools and strategies so that they can solve complex, authentic, mathematical problems. Westchester students are provided with rigorous problems about real-world topics and have access to a variety of tools such as rekenreks, base-ten blocks, and other hands-on/digital tools to make sense of the difficult problems that they are given. At Westchester, WE build a wide variety of strategies during number talks and Workshop 2.0 lessons where students are provided with situations and problems and are asked to share and defend their strategies for solving problems with their Crew. Thus, providing every student with opportunities to value the thinking of others while building and making sense of a repertoire of strategies that they can use to solve complex problems.
